This viola bow was made in Markneukirchen in the early 20th Century by the Nürnberger family. Having established themselves in Markneukirchen in the early 19th Century, the Nürnbergers were a mainstay of German bow making many years, and their work was well appreciated both by soloists and orchestral musicians across Europe. There were a number of makers within the family across the generations, starting with Franz Albert Nürnberger, born in 1826, who was well known for his older German model. His son Franz Albert Nürnberger II inherited the workshop in 1894, and eventually navigated the direction of the family's making towards French models, especially that of François Xavier Tourte. F. A. Nürnberger II's sons, grandson, and great-grandson all continued the tradition of making in the family, and all used the now classic "*ALBERT NÜRNBERGER*" stamp.

The bow is stamped "*ALBERT NÜRNBERGER*" and weighs 62.6 grams. It has an octagonal stick of pernambuco, with silver wire lapping and a leather grip. The frog is of ebony with a Parisian eye, and the bow is fully silver mounted. The button is in three parts of silver and ebony. It is in good condition.

It has an even, springy stick, which possesses a very comfortable amount of bite and articulation. Although it is quite light for a viola bow, it is well-weighted towards the tip, giving the bow a good feeling of weight and poise. It has quite a clear sound, with lots of potential for colour and variety in all registers, without becoming too muddy or obscured on the C string. It would be very well suited to a player at a tertiary or professional level.
