9:30am | Bowstroke Boot Camp - With Violin and Cello Pedagogues, Caron Chan and Simone Koolhaas

Bring your instruments for this hands-on session that’ll help you whip your students’ bow strokes into shape! Violin and cello pedagogues Caron Chan and Simone Koolhaas will explore the fundamentals of bowing set-up, and playing with resonance, and will also demonstrate exercises to help your students master bowing techniques such as martelé, detaché, sautillé and spiccato.

11:30am | Optimising Your Sound - With Vice President and Product Development Manager at Larsen Strings, Thomas Zwieg

Ever wondered what influences the response, volume, and timbre of your instrument, and how you can optimise this? In this session, Thomas Zwieg, Vice President of Product Development at Larsen Strings will be providing insight into how instruments, strings, bow, and bowing techniques interact with one another, and what can be done to influence and improve qualities such as response, articulation, volume, and tone.

Meet the Presenters

After completing her Masters of Music, Caron Chan studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Formerly a First Violinist with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Ms Chan currently plays with the Opera Australia Orchestra and is a guest musician with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. She has appeared as Guest Concertmaster with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra and Guest Concertmaster and Soloist with the Metropolitan Orchestra.

A respected pedagogue, Ms Chan has taught at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in the Rising Stars, Bachelor of Music and Music Education programs, and she is currently the Chief AMEB Examiner for Strings.

Ms Chan is committed to music in the community and regularly takes her students to perform music for cancer patients, their families and carers at the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Simone Koolhaas grew up in Sydney, commencing cello lessons at age 7 with Dorothy Sumner. She completed her Bachelor of Music and Masters of Music (performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium with teachers Georg Pederson and Susan Blake.


Interested in pedagogy, she has observed lessons with Irene Sharp, and has had short study periods in the UK. Simone is currently an AMEB examiner, with over twenty-five years of experience and was the syllabus consultant for the AMEB series 2 cello syllabus.


She has been teaching for many years within Sydney schools and within her private studio. working with cello students ranging from beginner to diploma levels. Simone encourages all her students to achieve positive outcomes, so that they enjoy learning and contribute to the musical life within their schools and the wider community.

Dr. Thomas Zwieg completed his master’s degree in materials science at Technical University Dresden, Germany, in 1994, subsequently conducting materials technology research at the Danish Technological Institute and gaining his PhD in 2006.

At the start of 2007, he took up a role as Product Development Manager with the Danish manufacturer of instrument strings Larsen Strings A/S, and has been Vice President and Product Development Manager since 2013.

He regularly shares his knowledge and expertise in talks and workshops, explaining how to adjust the tone and optimize the sound of instruments by choosing the right strings.
