This violin was made by Carlo Moretti in 1928 in Ancona, a town in central Italy. The son of Ruggeri and Ida Pulini, Moretti was a self-taught violin maker but was prolific throughout his career. According to Vannes, by 1949 he had made at least 200 instruments including violins, violas and cellos. This violin is sold with a certificate from Florian Leonhard, and is featured in his most recent book 'The Makers of Central Italy' on page 262-265.

The violin is labelled "No. 32 / Carolus Moretti Anconitanus / Fecit Anconae Anno Domini 1928". The body measures 357mm along the back, 167mm across the upper bouts and 206mm across the lower bouts. It has a one-piece back of highly flamed maple with a broad curl, and matching ribs and scroll. The top is a lightly grained spruce, and the violin has a red-brown varnish with boxwood tailpiece and rosewood pegs. It is in good condition.

This violin has a fiery, rich sound, which immediately fills the room and carries in its tone all kinds of passion and character. It also possesses a quality of texture which gives both passagework and melody a sense of tangibility and provides the player with a wide palette of colours to choose from. Best suited to players at a tertiary or professional level, this violin would excel in all forms of playing, be it soloistic, chamber, or orchestral.
