Gand & Bernardel Freres Violin Paris 1876

This violin was made at the Gand & Bernardel firm in 1876, in Paris. Gand & Bernardel Frères was a firm established in 1866, and was one of the most prolific and widely known workshops in France during the 19th Century. The core of Gand & Bernardel was Charles Nicolas Eugène Gand, and the brothers Gustave and Ernest Bernardel. They also were the proving grounds for an astounding number of young French violin and bow makers, who would often go on to form their own workshops, including figures like Charles Peccatte and François Nicolas Voirin. The firm continued in strength until Gustave Bernardel sold the firm to Caressa & Français in 1901. 

The violin is labelled "Gand & Bernardel Fres / Luthiers du Conservatoire de Musique / N 647. Paris 1876". The body measures 358mm along the back, 169mm across the upper bouts and 209mm across the lower bouts. It has a one-piece back of highly flamed maple with matching ribs and scroll, and the top is a finely grained spruce. The violin is finished with a red-brown varnish on a golden ground, a rosewood tailpiece, and matching pegs. It is in good condition. 

Its sound is best characterised as sophisticated and bright, carrying lots of energy and variety for any form of playing. It shines in the upper register, being warm and sonorous on the E string, and is quite generous with its power in the lower register. It has a quick response, an easy action, and projects well at any dynamic and contact point. This would make an ideal instrument for any professional musician exploring orchestral, chamber, or solo repertoire.
