This viola bow was made by Andrea Proietti in 2024, at his workshop in Cesena. Proietti was born in 1976, and began his career as a bow-maker in Cremona at the age of 21. Over the next few years, he worked with Katia Luis and Remi Bertaux in Avignone, Edwin Clemènt in Paris, and subseqently returned to Cremona to work in the workshop of Giovanni Lucchi. In addition to his making, Proietti also taught at the International School of Bowmaking in Cremona for almost a decade in the 2000's. From 2007, Proietti has been working in his own workshop in Cesena, producing violin, viola, and cello bows that have garnered much acclaim in Europe, recently winning a prize at the 19th ANLAI International Violin Making Competition for one of his bows. This bow comes with a certificate of authenticity from the maker.
The bow is stamped "Andrea PROIETTI" and weighs 70.1 grams. It has a round stick of pernambuco, with a lapping of silver tinsel and black thread, and a leather grip. The frog is of ebony, with no eye, and fully mounted in silver. The button is three parts of silver and ebony.
It has a solid, weighty stick, which possesses a dense core of sound with a crisp touch. The stick provides lots of very tangible feedback from the string, which helps with creating and switching between a variety of different characters and styles of playing. It lends a warm and deep flavour to the overall sound of the viola being played, and can almost have a cellistic feeling to it in certain registers. It would be well suited to a player at a tertiary or professional level.
