Gold Mounted Ma Rong Di Violin Bow
This violin bow was made by Ma Rong Di in Shanghai. Ma Rong Di is one of China's most well-established bow-makers, and has had a long history of making, restoring, and studying violin bows, being as confident a copyist of fine French bows as he is a maker of his own models. He has been incredibly prolific over the course of his career, making over 800 bows for violins, violas, and cellos, which are used by a number of orchestral musicians, teachers, and soloists across the globe, including renowned violinist Ning Feng. He has also won several awards for his work, including four Certificates of Merit for a quartet of bows at the 12th Violin Society of America, and in 2013 he won two gold medals and the highest mark awarded for a violin, viola, and cello bow respectively, at the 2nd China International Violin and Bow Making Competition.
The bow is stamped "Ma Rong-Di Shanghai" and weighs 60.7 grams. It has a round stick of pernambuco, with a whalebone lapping and a leather grip. It is fully gold mounted, and the frog bears a Parisian eye.
It has a springy stick, wound up with energy, which responds quickly and clearly to the smallest changes and adjustments. It is full of character and carries a strong, even tone in all registers, making blending across strings very smooth. Its flexibility and balance makes virtuosic playing quite easy and comfortable, and its articulation and fullness lends it plenty of power and projection for soloistic repertoire like concertos. This bow would be very well suited for a performer doing tertiary study or playing professionally.
