This violin was made by Eugenio Degani in 1896, in Venice. Degani was born in 1840 in Merlara, a small town near Montagnana, and in his early life he studied with his father Domenico Degani. After training and working in Montagnana, for a small period in the late 1880's he worked in Trieste before moving to Venice in 1888, where he established his own workshop. He is known for revitalising the Venetian tradition of violin making which had been established by figures like Gofriller, D. Montagnana, and Gobetti, and propelling it into the 20th Century. His instruments are traditionally very fine and neatly constructed, often relatively slender with a long, deeply carved scroll. This instrument comes with a certificate and photos.
The violin is labelled "DEGANI EUGENIO / (quattuordici medaglie di merito / FECE / VENEZIA - ANNO 1896". The body measures 356mm along the back, 163mm across the upper bouts and 204mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of moderately flamed maple of a medium curl, and a top of very finely grained spruce which broadens towards the bouts. It is finished with a dark gold-brown varnish and ebony fittings, and is in good condition.
