This violin was made by Edgar Russ in 2023, in Cremona. Originally from Austria, Edgar Russ developed a passion for musical instrument making at an early age. He graduated from the International School of Violin Making in Cremona in 1989, after which he moved to America to expand his expertise. Russ returned to Cremona and opened his first workshop in 1990, participating in various important exhibitions and music fairs world-wide for 5 years. After collaborating with Giorgio Grisales the following 10 years, he opened a new independent workshop in the heart of Cremona in 2004.
The violin bears two labels, the first being "Edgar E. Russ / fece in Cremona, anno 2023", and the second being "Joseph Guarnerius fecit / Cremone anno 1750" and is based on a Guarneri model. The body measures 353mm along the back, 164mm across the upper bouts and 204mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of maple with a moderate flame of broad curl, with matching ribs and scroll, and the top is a finely grained spruce which broadens towards the bouts. The violin has been finished with an amber-gold varnish with boxwood fittings.
It has a resonant, open quality, and projects itself easily in all registers. It's tone is best characterised by warmth, and a layered, spacious sound, which responds quickly and easily to a variety of bow strokes. This makes it just as good for chamber and orchestral playing as it is for soloistic performance, and very flexible across various genres -- for more virtuosic music, the quick response and openness brings out the speed of playing with ample clarity, and for more formal genres like sonatas, the tone is thick and layered enough to attain a rich, complex sound.
