This violin was made by Sofia Vettori in Florence in 2017. Vettori was born in Florence in the early 1980's as part of a family steeped in the tradition of violin making. Her grandfather, Dario I Vettori, established himself during the 1930's and 40's in a tiny mountain town near Florence called Firenzuola, making violins with whatever materials he could in the tight pre-war years. After the war, he trained in Cremona with makers such as Guiseppe Ornati, and by the 1950's he was slowly introducing his trade to his sons Paolo and Carlo. Through Paolo Vettori, a well-respected maker in his own right, the tradition passed down to Sofia Vettori and her two brothers, Dario II and Lapo. S. Vettori currently splits her time between her hometown of Florence and America, and combines her making activities with running a number of educational courses to bring her family's tradition to a wider audience. This instrument comes with a certificate from the maker, as well as a dendochronology report certifying that the wood used is likely to be "200 years old or more".
The violin is labelled "Sofia Vettori filia Paoli / Fecit Florentiae A.D. 2017", with the maker's name signed, initials stamped on the label and bottom block, and "MODELLO GUARNERI DEL 'GESU "CANNONE"" handwritten above the label, as well as "BALEARI" written on the top block. The body measures 354mm along the back, 167mm across the upper bouts and 207mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of moderately flamed maple with a variable medium to broad flame, and the ribs and scroll are well selected to match. The top is a broadly grained spruce which broadens further towards the bouts, and the violin is finished with dark gold-brown varnish and ebony fittings. It is in good condition.
This instrument has a wonderful vibrant tone colour, projecting strength and clarity on every note. It's upper register gives this violin a sparkling quality which is complimented by the broadness of the lower register. This violin possesses a quick response and requires very minimal effort to play, giving violinists the opportunity to easily explore more high level playing. This violin would do well in solo performances however, would also blend well in any chamber music setting.
