3/4 Double Bass Czech c. 1900
This double bass was made in what was then Czechoslovakia in the early 1900s.
It is labeled "Made in Czechoslovakia", and is a flat-back bass made after a gamba pattern, with a string length of 41 3/4" and measuring 43 1/8" or 109.5cm down the back. It has an adjustable bridge and antique ebony pegs supported by geared adjusters. The back, ribs, and scroll are of maple, and the front is spruce of a fine grain which broadens towards the bouts.
It has dark yet articulate sound, and would be just as good in soloistic repertoire as it would be in orchestral or chamber settings. Its flexibility also extends to jazz as well, especially if it was strung with Spirocore strings, as it has a remarkably resonant pizzicato, in all registers. It projects easily and is very capable of a wide variety of colours and complexities, and as such would be very well suited to a confident bassist performing in a variety of situations, at a tertiary or professional level.
