This cello was made circa 1900, in Mirecourt, France. The instrument's namesake 'François Breton' was a sought after instrument maker throughout the 1800's and was known to have been the Duchesse d’Angouleme’s personal luthier. His work was recognised throughout Europe, and the JTL and Laberte workshops were known to have made some of their instruments in his style.

This cello is labelled "F. Breton, Brevetè de S.M.G / Me La Duchesse d'Angoulème / á Mirecourt, 1830 Breton". The back is made with two pieces of maple, and is moderately flamed with a narrow curl and has matching ribs and scroll. The top is of a moderately grained spruce with an amber-brown varnish, ebony fittings, and a french bridge. The body measures 744mm along the back, 322mm across the upper bouts and 433mm across the lower bouts. It is in good condition.

This instrument has a well balanced tone which projects easily across the high and low registers. Each note played is full of rich colours, bringing a complexity and warmth to the sound, and allows musicians to explore the nuances of their playing. This instrument would be suitable for players at a tertiary level or higher.
