The Knoll workshop where this bow was crafted, was established in 1932 with Alfred Knoll (1909-1980). Alfred’s son Harmut was born in 1937 and he successfully completed his master’s craftsman exam in 1965. In 1968 Harmut had a son Gerald and in 1977 Harmut took over the Knoll workshop. Gerald took his master’s craftsman exam in 1998 & in 2003 he took over the workshop. The Knoll workshop produces a large range of bows from an advanced student standard to that of a professional soloist.

This cello bow is stamped 'ALFRED KNOLL ***' and weighs 81.70 grams. The stick has been rounded and is made from pernambuco. It measures 717mm in length and has silver lapping and a leather grip. The frog is made from ebony and is silver mounted with a parisian eye, and has a three piece button of ebony and silver.

This cello bow is quite flexible, making it very easy for players to bounce on the string and achieve very good control with strokes such as spiccato and ricochet. The bow is well-balanced throughout the length of the stick, and responds quickly to directional and dynamic changes. This bow would be highly suited for players undertaking tertiary study and beyond.
