Violin Labelled C. Bergonzi French c.1900
This violin was made in France around the turn of the century.
The instrument is labelled "Modele d'apres / Anno 17 Carlo Bergonzi / fece in Cremona". The body measures 356mm along the back, 169mm across the upper bouts and 208mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of moderately flamed maple with a tight curl, ribs and scroll have been selected to match. The front is a finely grained spruce. The violin has been finished with an amber-gold varnish and ebony pegs. It is in good condition.
This violin has sweetness at the core of its sound, and has an innate Frenchness about it. Players are able to draw out a tone which is full and vibrant, without losing the delicacy of violinistic expression. The instrument responds well to changes in bowing and dynamic shifts, and would be most suited for chamber or orchestral playing in the upper AMEB grades or at a tertiary level.
