Cello - Hagen Weise #320 Poplar 3/4
This cello was made by Hagen Weise in Baiersdorf, in 2023. Weise has been active since 1991 when he commenced work for the Roderisch Paesold Company in Bubenreuth, Germany. In 2004 Weise successfully completed his master violin-making examination. Since 2010 Weise has been dedicated to making fine instruments in his own workshop, often experimenting with different kinds of woods and models of different makers. The instrument also comes with a certificate of authenticity from Weise.
The cello is labelled "Hagen Weise / Baiersdorf 2024 1524320-2". The body measures 700mm along the back, 322mm across the upper bouts and 404mm across the lower bouts. It has a two-piece back of poplar with matching ribs and scroll, and the top is a broadly grained spruce which widens to the bouts. It is finished with a light amber-brown varnish and ebony fittings
It has a smooth, mature sound, quite clear in all registers, with a relatively broad feeling overall. It projects easily with little extra effort, making it a good choice for players looking for a stronger instrument while on their way to a full size, or for a smaller cello with a good voice, and it comfortably deals with a wide variety of repertoire.
